Public WALKS & TALKS (see Talk topics):
4 OCTOBER at 11am – Museum of Oxford ‘Jericho 200’ TALK: ‘A Jericho Scrapbook’
Based on the new book of the same name, this talk will highlight key moments in Jericho’s early history, from before the University’s purchase of land for its Printing Press in 1825 and the establishment of the future Lucy’s ironworks the same year. It was also in 1825 that the first streets of houses began to replace lush meadowland running down to the Oxford Canal. Jericho’s subsequent unsavoury reputation contrasts with its embrace of cultural icons such as the Pre-Raphaelites, Thomas Hardy, Inspector Morse, Philip Pullman, and Alice in Wonderland.

7 OCTOBER – Jericho Historical & Literary TOUR – 2pm.
After a visit to the Oxford University Press museum, the walk will trace the 200-year transition from lush meadowland to dynamic, sometimes controversial, suburb, with reference to JLHT’s new book, A Jericho Scrapbook. Ends inside the impsing St Barnabas’ Church.

12 NOVEMBER – Jericho: Oxford’s ‘dangerously hospitable’ 200-year-old suburb – TALK 6pm
Oxford Civic Society, Rewley House, Wellington Square
1825 was when the University purchased the land on which to relocate its Printing Press and when the ironworks which evolved into Lucy’s was fully established. The same year, streets of houses began to replace the lush meadowland running down to the Oxford Canal. Mark Davies explores how Jericho’s subsequent unsavoury and controversial reputation contrasts with its association with cultural icons such as the Pre-Raphaelites, Thomas Hardy, Inspector Morse, Philip Pullman, & Alice in Wonderland.

TALKS elsewhere
I am happy to travel! I have given talks in numerous places in England and Wales, and on two short tours of the Republic of Ireland, but Assam in north-east India is the farthest away so far !
